Why is My Roof Leaking Close to the Chimney?
That makes perfect sense, but it is wrong about 9 or of 10 times if you had hired a reputable roofing contractor who originally installed your new roof.

That roofing connection with the chimney is one of the most important flashings details on the roof. The roofer who does a quick and dirty chimney tie-in will use tar or some other temporary sealant. The professional roofing contractor who does it correctly will start with an Ice & Water Shield wrap, then install all new glavanized baked enamel roof flashings, and then seal every overlap with a lifetime sealant.
But why so many chimney leaks – the problem is usually the chimney itself. When was the last time you inspected your chimney for wear and had the brick and mortar sealed? Do you have a chimney cap to keep the 40″ of rain we get each year from going down your chimney flue?
So if you see a stain around the sheetrock close to your chimney, do a quick inspection of the chimney itself. If it looks poorly to you, call a mason who specializes in chimney repair. If your chimney looks like the one above, in perfect shape with excellent roof to chimney flashings, check to make sure that it is not an old stain, then call the roofing office.
