There are many new roofing materials like PVC or TPO that are available to the roofing contractor for flat or low pitched roofs. However, there is one flat roofing material that has been around for a long time that can be quite useful in specific situations. The above picture shows a typical transition from a pitched to a low slope roof section that was done incorrectly and has resulted in leaks and interior damage.

Torch Down roofing is one of the most commonly used roofing types for flat or slightly pitched roofs in conjunction with composition roofing materials. It consists of a tough membrance embedded in a thick layer of asphalt and protected with ceramic granules. Torch Down is completely impermeable to rainwater and because it shares the same material composition as asphalt shingles, it is quite compatible. Also, the granules are colored to match the roof color, so they blend together nicely.

The cost of Torch Down roofing will depend on the roofing contractor you use and his qualifications. Don’t be cheap with this project, it requires a special talent to install Torch Down roofing correctly and safely. However, based on the picture above, it will cost you much less in repairs and sheetrock along with hours of frustration.
