A Trustworthy Roofer: Finding Your Perfect Match: Part II

Roof Goat.jpg

In the last article we discussed how choosing a
roofing contractor involves many of the same trusts that any relationship is
built upon. Just like choosing a spouse, there is a better way and a risky way,
and the consequences and pain of making a mistake feel about the same,
emotionally and financially.

In the last article we discussed how choosing a
roofing contractor involves many of the same trusts that any relationship is
built upon. Just like choosing a spouse, there is a better way and a risky way,
and the consequences and pain of making a mistake feel about the same,
emotionally and financially.

1) Ask the contractor to provide you with
proof of insurance,
including
worker’s compensation and liability coverage and
a copy of their state
license.

2) Ask the roofing contractor for a list of
references and past clients you
can
call to find out if they were satisfied with the work done on
their
roof. Also check with the BBB and Angie’s List for local
reviews.
Don’t forget to go to the roofing contractors website.

3) Ask your roofing contractor who will be
performing the work on your roof
and how they are supervised.
Discuss how long the job will take to complete
and what happens if it rains
during the project.

4) Ask to see a copy of the contract and warranty.
Which manufacture’s
materials
do they install and are they an approved applicator for the
roofing material being
proposed?

5) Ask for a very detailed estimate of the roof
project, including all materials
being proposed – from the
type of felt underlayment to the number of fasteners being installed in each
shingle, along with whether they are nails or staples.

You may not understand exactly every aspect of your
new roof installation, but if you have a detailed bid and take the time to
review it with the installer, any discrepancies that may arise will be much
easier to resolve.
