Roofing Installation: Commercial or Residential?
When you decide to replace your roof on your home or
business, whom should you call – a commercial roofer for your
business and a residential roofer for your home? Not necessarily.
When you decide to replace your roof on your home or
business, whom should you call – a commercial roofer for your
business and a residential roofer for your home? Not necessarily.
Generally speaking, a commercial or industrial roof
is flat and iscovered with tar and gravel, torchdown, pvc, tpo or
metal roofing. It can also have several types of equipment positioned
on the roof itself, such as HVAC units, solar units, sign or tower
supports, and may different types of roof exhaust penetrations.
Residential roofs are generally pitched and are often
roofed with variety of asphalt composition materials, metal, tile, or
occasionally wood shake or wood shingles. Typically there are vents and a
chimney dotting the roof line along with other issues.
Each product installed has its own unique application
and roof installation tricks. The goal here is to hire a company that has
experience working with the materials you are considering and the structure it
is going on. So if your building has several different types of materials and surfaces to it, such as
a pitched roof covering a loading dock and also a flat warehouse roof, you may
need several unique crews or maybe even two companies.
Make sure when you begin the bidding process to ask
questions regarding what types of roofing material the contractor specializes
in. Remember, just because it’s a home doesn’t mean the residential roofing
contractor is experienced or qualified to install the large flat roof over your
addition. Most roofing problems occur when a crew is doing a roofing
application for the first or second time. And just because its on a building,
doesn’t mean a hardened commercial company and crew are the right choice.
Commercial or Residential? – Concentrate on getting
a company with experienced crews that are experts with the roofing materials
you choose.
